I got Trainz to keep the kids entertained, but it is so Backwards compatible with older content, so you can use pretty much anything made for the Trainz franchise. Minuses: The access to all of that user-created data is slow, unless you pay for high-speed FTP access.
The database of info that Trainz uses when getting the data is slow, and can tie up your PC unless you’ve got a quad core, in which case you can launch the program and just let it run in the background.
And depending on how much content you retrieve, it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to a day to launch There’s VERY little instruction in the manual on setting up routes and scenarios, and how they work together. I’m still digging into this program a month into owning it and it’s striking how much detail there can be to a simple map. I can see how some people spend months generating a route. I purchased Trainz in August. I have enjoyed the game very much, but I’ll leave it to someone else to review the actual game.
This is significant, because I have learned that it is not possible to update this version of the game with the latest patches put out by the original game developer Auran. The version I downloaded from Amazon was Build Auran has recently issued patches to update the game to Build and now Build , to address various problems and bugs that have been identified within the game.
Build was left out of these update patches, and I have learned from the Trainz community that Auran and Steam don’t seem to cooperate together when it comes to authorizing updates, so this version of the game may never be able to be updated beyond it’s current build. Although I enjoy the game, I’m disappointed that I will miss out on future improvements and fixes made to the game.
