The “using an external HD and booting from it” method has one major advantage in that both Logic and OS X plus any 3rd pary plugins can be easily updated together and based on what i have seen with other clients Just updating Logic itself without updating OS X and any 3rd party plugins for that matter or though less so..
IMO in a pro situation an OS that constantly updates itself is a risk. IMO a program that is reliant on an Internet connection is a risk. I would be using Carbon Copy cloner or something to image the control room drive then taking that to be updated and imaging it back across. I’d much rather do that, it makes more sense to me, especially seeing as I’m quite wary of the flaws in the hack that is Time Machine and rolling back bad OS updates.
We should all know that, as quickly as most developers get updates out for new OS versions, there’s always one or two that find it more of a hurdle and as a result we would rather play it safe and stay well away from the cutting edge till the bugs are documented and squashed.
By then, there will be more new stuff added and the cycle goes on so staying a few versions back gives our third party devs a chance to work around most of the bugs and therefore keeps our system stable. Mavericks will destroy that if updates are non-optional.

IMO in a pro situation an OS that constantly updates itself is a risk. IMO a program that is reliant on an Internet connection is a risk. I would be using Carbon Copy cloner or something to image the control room drive then taking that to be updated and imaging it back across. I’d much rather do that, it makes more sense to me, especially seeing as I’m quite wary of the flaws in the hack that is Time Machine and rolling back bad OS updates. We should all know that, as quickly as most developers get updates out for new OS versions, there’s always one or two that find it more of a hurdle and as a result we would rather play it safe and stay well away from the cutting edge till the bugs are documented and squashed.
By then, there will be more new stuff added and the cycle goes on so staying a few versions back gives our third party devs a chance to work around most of the bugs and therefore keeps our system stable. Mavericks will destroy that if updates are non-optional. That pretty much means I will either have to firewall block apple.
